Did you know that International Astronomy Day is celebrated twice a year? It is actually celebrated twice per year, close to the first quarter moon of spring and fall — on May 18 and October 10, in 2024.
Astronomy has been studied since the beginning of time. Several cultures studied the stars and based their lives around what was happening in the skies. The most famous example is the Mayan culture. They kept track of the stars, moon and sun for agricultural and religious purposes, believing that their gods influenced the skies.
One of the most famous astronomers was Nicolaus Copernicus. He was the first to propose that the earth revolved around the sun. Until he made this observation, astronomers believed that the earth was the center of the universe.
If you think you would like to study astronomy, you will likely need to pay for post-secondary education.
