Watermelon Day-August 3rd

There’s nothing that says summer quite like a slice of fresh watermelon. Sweet, refreshing, and perfect for hot weather, watermelon has become a summertime favourite for picnics, barbecues, beach days, and backyard gatherings. That’s why August 3 is the perfect time to celebrate National Watermelon Day.

Watermelon is believed to have originated in Africa thousands of years ago and is now enjoyed all around the world. Today, there are more than 1,200 varieties of watermelon grown in nearly 100 countries. While the classic red watermelon is the most popular, you can also find yellow, orange, and even seedless varieties.

Besides being delicious, watermelon is also packed with benefits. Since it is made up of more than 90 per cent water, it is a great way to stay hydrated during the summer months. It also contains vitamins A and C, antioxidants, and nutrients that support overall health. Whether eaten fresh, blended into smoothies, tossed into salads, or frozen into popsicles, watermelon is one of the most versatile fruits of the season.

National Watermelon Day is also a great excuse to gather with family and friends. Some communities celebrate with watermelon-eating contests, festivals, or outdoor events. At home, you can keep it simple by serving chilled slices at dinner or trying a new watermelon-inspired recipe.

Looking for fun ways to celebrate? Try making watermelon salsa, grilling watermelon wedges, or creating a refreshing fruit platter for your next summer gathering. You can even challenge friends to a seed-spitting contest for a little old-fashioned fun.

As you enjoy the simple pleasures of summer, it’s also a great time to think about your child’s future. Families may be eligible for the Canada Learning Bond — money from the Government of Canada to help children save for post-secondary education. Eligible children could receive up to $2,000 for their future, and no personal contributions are required to receive the bond.

To learn more about eligibility and how to apply for the Canada Learning Bond, contact your local service provider or financial institution.

However you choose to celebrate, National Watermelon Day is a reminder to slow down, enjoy the sunshine, and savour one of summer’s sweetest treats.
