Have You Considered a Career as a Carpenter?

Have You Considered a Career as a Carpenter?
March 31, 2022 by LorriK

Skilled carpenters are always needed to build furniture, office buildings and building renovations, etc.  Whether it is a new build or a renovation a wide range of carpentry techniques will be used.

A general carpentry apprenticeship program will teach apprentices to measure, shape, cut and construct forms for concrete pouring, create foundations, floors, walls and ceilings and build stairs, counters and cupboards — all under the direction of experienced workers and employers, both on the job and in the classroom. Apprentice students also develop manual dexterity, organization skills and the ability to visualize how pieces come together.

In Ontario college carpentry programs, students learn to use a variety of carpentry tools while following plans, specifications and codes for  constructing residential and commercial buildings. Construction safety is also emphasized.

Each program is different, but these are a few of the courses that you may do in a construction apprenticeship course:

  • Structural framework
  • Interior and exterior wall finishing
  • Blueprint reading and drafting
  • Site surveying
  • Energy efficient construction

Students can use their Canada Learning Bond to help with the costs of an apprenticeship program.
