A limerick is a five-line rhyme. It is usually funny and has strict rules for rhyming. The first, second and fifth lines rhyme, while the third and fourth lines are shorter and share a different rhyme.
The limerick was popularized by Edward Lear, an English artist, illustrator, musician, author and poet, in his first book A Book of Nonsense (1846), He wrote 212 limericks, mostly considered nonsense literature.
Limerick Day is celebrated on May 12 each year.
While it isn’t a national holiday, National Limerick Day gives us an opportunity to create fun 5-Line poems.
