The Ancient Olympic Games were religious and athletic festivals held every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus in Olympia, Greece.

The origin of the Olympics is shrouded in mystery and legend and according to legend, Heracles first called the Games “Olympic” and established the custom of holding them every four years. Ancient Games events included running events, a pentathlon, wrestling and equestrian events.

The Olympic Games were suspended but since that happened so long ago, the reasons for doing this are unknown.

On March 25, 1896, the newly constituted International Olympic Committee held the first Modern Olympics in the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens.  The first modern games had 14 nations with 241 athletes who competed in 43 events. Since then, the Olympics have evolved and grown bigger. The Winter Olympics were introduced in 1924 to include winter sports.

Many student athletes receive scholarships to attend post-secondary education which helps to defray the cost. Even if you are on track to receive a scholarship, be sure to apply for the Canada Learning Bond. If you are eligible, you could receive between $500 – $2,000 for post-secondary education.
