In 2008 the United Nations declared April 2 as World Autism Awareness Day, to increase understanding and acceptance of individuals with autism.
The US National Autism Association defines autism as a bio-neurological developmental disability that generally appears before the age of 3. Autism impacts the development of the brain in the areas of social interaction, communication skills, and cognitive function. Individuals with autism typically have difficulties with verbal and non-verbal communication, social interactions, and leisure or play activities. Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder do attend post-secondary education and the Canada Learning Bond doesn’t impact other benefits that the individual receives.
All Canadian children born after January 1, 2004 may be eligible to receive the Canada Learning Bond, a grant of up to $2,000 for post-secondary education.
