Every year on July 15, World Youth Skills Day highlights the importance of helping young people develop the skills they need to succeed in work, education, and everyday life. The day recognizes that providing youth with opportunities to learn and grow helps build stronger communities and brighter futures for everyone.
Skills come in many forms. Technical and trade skills, communication, problem-solving, teamwork, creativity, and digital literacy all play an important role in preparing young people for future careers and life opportunities. Whether youth are interested in college, university, apprenticeships, or skilled trades, developing strong skills and confidence can open doors to new possibilities.
World Youth Skills Day also recognizes the important role that families, schools, community organizations, and employers play in supporting youth as they learn and grow. Encouragement, access to education, and opportunities for hands-on learning can make a lasting difference in helping young people reach their goals.
One important way families can support a child’s future education and career path is by applying for the Canada Learning Bond (CLB). The Canada Learning Bond is money provided by the Government of Canada to help eligible children from lower-income families save for post-secondary education. Eligible children can receive up to $2,000 to help pay for future studies, including college, university, apprenticeships, and skilled trades training.
Many families are surprised to learn that they do not need to contribute their own money to receive the Canada Learning Bond. Opening a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) and applying for the CLB is free and can help create valuable opportunities for a child’s future.
This World Youth Skills Day, take time to celebrate the talents, creativity, and potential of young people in your community. Then consider taking one small step that could help support their future success.
